The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced recently that advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs) can now provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to 100 patients in the first year and ultimately provide MAT to 275 patients if they are practicing in a qualified practice setting, which is defined in the SAMHSA announcement. SAMHSA also announced that certified nurse-midwives (CNMs), certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) are now eligible to apply for their MAT waivers pursuant to the authorization in the SUPPORT Act. We understand that SAMSHA is notifying current MAT-waived providers of these developments. We will continue to monitor this issue to ensure the implementation is consistent with the announcement. Also, last week the Trump administration authorized an additional $1.8 billion to states to help combat the opioid crisis.
